What's a Lizzo?
Welcome to the newsletter for people who don't understand social media
My sister told me last year her daughter was singing a Lizzo song and her husband asked who’s song she was singing. Her daughter replied, “Lizzo!” and my brother in-law asked, “What’s a Lizzo?”
If this feels like you when it comes to social media, you’re not alone. Much like many other people, I too started a TikTok in 2020 and quickly abandoned the app. I didn’t understand the dancing or the videos or the trends. My friend and mentor, Dawnelle, however, didn’t abandon TikTok and kept plugging away at her online business. You see, she was posting videos previously on Instagram, but at the time, Instagram prioritized beautiful photos. Her videos had amazing content, but the problem was, the algorithm wasn’t pushing them out to the right audience. She started putting videos on TikTok (and repurposing for Instagram to minimize her work) and went virl….several times. I watched in awe as she went from 100 followers to 100k and built her business up more than she could have dreamed.
I knew I had to start a TikTok and try and build up my own business which was suffering due to the pandemic. So, I resurrected my account and went to work posting every day, 3-5 times a day.
In the year that I’ve put time and effort into my TikTok, I have gone from 100 followers to almost 9k and still growing. My growth on Instagram has stalled, but my videos that I repurpose from TikTok are getting more views than my reels ever were before. This is because most of the trends flow from TikTok to Instagram and it doesn’t take a business degree to figure out that if you want your small business to grow, to become an influencer and monetize your social media, or simply want the vanity number of followers….then you need to be putting time in online.
Perhaps you don’t understand TikTok, or maybe you don’t want one. That’s OK, I’m here to help you grow by passing on my tips and tricks either way. How? Because, I spend a lot of time on social media and I watch trends. I know what works on my account and I’ve seen it work for other creators.
So why should you care about your social media?
Because the more views your reels get, the more people are seeing your content, the more of a chance you have to convert those viewers to followers and eventually clients.
The more followers you have the more brands are likely to want to work with you if your goal is to become a content creator. Did you know brands are often looking for people to create User Generated Content? That means you make videos for them to post on their social media, without even having to post on your own. Recently I had a brand pay me $500 to make three 30 second videos for them. Could you use that kind of extra cash just for making a video on your iphone?
Understanding social media helps you understand what to post so that you can bring attention to your products or services without always sounding like you are being “salesy.” The goal should be to sell without selling, an I can coach you through that process.
So if you are ready to take your social media to the next level, to start growing your business in 2023 and to finally understand trends, then this newsletter is for you.
From this newsletter you can expect:
Trends you should try that are easy
Trending audio to go with any video
How to make a reel or TikTok without any skills needed
What apps to use to make your videos
How to keep your audience engaged and convert those views to sales
Why it’s so important to post consistently and how to fit this in to your busy life
I am sure this newsletter will grow as I evolve and my audience evolves, but I am so excited to share what I learn with you!
Here’s an example of a video I posted on TikTok that was trending (the audio and the template)
As you can see it got 692 views. I posted the same video on Instagram:
It got 16 thousand views. Why? Because I posted in on Instagram before it was trending.
I can’t guarantee every reel or TikTok will go viral, and the success of your social media ultimately depends on you. But I can say, if what you are doing now isn’t working, then what’s the harm in trying my tips and tricks for 60 days and seeing if it works for you? If nothing else, you’ll gain a better understanding of social media and how it all works and how you can use these free apps to make money.
Sound good?
